- Learning objective
- By the end, your child can build an expanded noun phrase using adjectives and a prepositional phrase to paint a precise picture.
An expanded noun phrase adds detail to a noun to paint a clearer picture. At Year 5, the best ones use adjectives AND a prepositional phrase — for example, “the crumbling castle on the hill”.
This mission builds up one layer at a time: from the plain noun, to adjectives, to a prepositional phrase, to the full thing.
How to use this
- Talk about the picture each phrase creates — precise beats long.
- The answer guide for the earlier missions is at the bottom.
the dog
the enormous, shaggy dog with muddy paws
💡 Two adjectives + a prepositional phrase (“with muddy paws”).
a house
a lonely house at the end of the lane
💡 The prepositional phrase adds place.
Mission 1🎨 Add the Adjectives
Expand each noun with TWO adjectives that paint a clear picture.
- ___, ___ forest
- ___, ___ storm
- ___, ___ stranger
💡 Choose precise adjectives — “ancient, tangled” beats “big, nice”.
Mission 2📍 Add a Prepositional Phrase
Add a phrase starting with a preposition (in, on, with, under, beside, at the end of…) to each noun.
- the old man ___
- a golden key ___
- the abandoned ship ___
Mission 3🏗️ Build the Full Phrase
Now combine both! Turn each plain noun into a full expanded noun phrase with adjectives AND a prepositional phrase.
Mission 4✍️ Now Write!
Write two or three sentences describing a spooky place. Use at least two expanded noun phrases.
Success checklist
- ✅ I can add adjectives to a noun.
- ✅ I can add a prepositional phrase to a noun.
- ✅ I can build an expanded noun phrase with both.
- ✅ I can use expanded noun phrases in my own writing.
Answer guide (for grown-ups)
- Missions 1–2: Open — accept any sensible adjectives / prepositional phrases. Look for precise, picture-building word choices rather than vague ones.
- Mission 3 example: “the ancient, crumbling castle on the misty hill” — two adjectives plus a prepositional phrase (“on the misty hill”).
- Mission 4: Open writing task — check each expanded noun phrase combines adjective(s) with a prepositional phrase.
